Mochos, corujas e bufos
Esta família inclui as chamadas corujas verdadeiras, reunindo quase todas as rapinas nocturnas (mochos, corujas e bufos), excepto as corujas-das-torres e espécies próximas destas. Têm um tamanho muito variável, desde o enorme bufo-real até ao minúsculo mocho-duende, que não é maior que um pardal. Apresentam uma cabeça grande, um disco facial redondo e uma plumagem críptica. Localizam as suas presas principalmente através da audição, graças aos seus ouvidos assimétricos.
